Wincanton crowns its Driver of the Year

Supply chain solutions provider Wincanton has hosted its 10th annual Driver of the Year competition, which rewards the most skilful and dedicated drivers in its fleet.

This year’s competition, which tests manoeuvring skills and driver awareness across both individual and team challenges, attracted over 1,000 of Wincanton’s best LGV and fork lift truck (FLT) drivers competing for the coveted titles.

Following a full day of challenges at Donington Park racetrack, Matthew Lewis was crowned LGV Driver of the Year, while Darren Connop scooped FLT Driver of the Year.

The team event, which showcases the need for close collaboration between the FLT and HGV teams to ensure the logistics business runs smoothly, also crowned its champions; Darren Connop, Steve Jolly, Pawel Sarzala and Sandra Barton.

Mark Ford, head of operational training at Wincanton, said: “The Driver of the Year competition serves as a great demonstration of the skills and professionalism of our drivers. They are the backbone of our business and the ambassadors for our brand on the road. Their high standards of performance and safety are vital to our success.”

Wincanton is one of the transport and logistics sector’s largest employers with over 4,000 drivers – making its Driver of the Year award a fiercely contested prize. The company ensures all its drivers receive regular training, including Driver Certificate of Professional Competence.
