Wrekin’s ‘big top’ protects new concrete floor from weather

A high specification concrete floor, the base for a new warehouse at Walkers Snack Foods, Leicester, has been completed on schedule – thanks to a large tent that was moved round the site to protect the floor as concrete was pumped in.

Wrekin Construction, working for project managers Summers Inman, was under tight time constraints with no margin for poor weather, despite the task starting in October for completion by Christmas. The solution was a large tent, 39 metres by 15 metres, which covered and protected the floor as the concrete was poured in.

Sliding roof slats allowed the workforce to uncover a section of the roof by pulling the slat down, so that the pump could access the site and pour concrete over the steel mesh. The roof was then re-covered so that the smooth surface of the floor, to a high tolerance of FM2, could be achieved, while another slat was pulled down as the operation progressed. After the concrete slab for the full area of the tent had been installed the tent was dismantled and re-built as construction moved around the site.

The new, 400mm thick reinforced concrete floor measures a total of 134 metres by 37 metres. It will be the base for a fully automated warehouse with racking up to 23 metres high, after which the structure will be clad. Racking, which is dependent on the floor and drainage being completed, was scheduled to start immediately after the Christmas break.

Wrekin was also contracted by Summer Inman to provide drainage round the new warehouse. About 250 metres of storm water drains have been installed at depths of between 2.5 and 3 metres.

The syphonic drainage system enables excess water to be stored in the 375mm to 900mm diameter pipes so that the entire drainage system is not overloaded, no matter how heavy the rainfall.
