Zetes Visidot barcode scanning now supports new bar code GS1 Databar

Using ImageID technology, Visidot instantaneously identifies hundreds of barcodes, including now the GS1 Databar, with 100% accuracy

GS1 DataBar carries greater information within a smaller surface area than the current EAN/UPC barcode

Existing installed base of Visidot Readers can be easily upgraded to support DataBar

Visidot, Zetes' (Euronext Brussels: ZTS) image based solution captures and recognises hundreds of barcodes in mere seconds and with 100% accuracy. The solution now also supports GS1 Databar, a barcode launched by GS1 at the beginning of 2010, which is smaller and can store more information than the traditional EAN/UPC barcode.

The GS1 DataBar is particularly useful for identifying small/hard-to-mark items such as fresh foods and pharmaceutical items, because of its ability to store additional information like serial numbers, lot numbers, and expiration dates. This extended capability perfectly complements the 100% accurate product authentication and traceability solutions offered by Visidot.

In classical logistics applications such as shipping verification, Visidot matches the identification information of goods being prepared for shipment with the original order, detecting missing or faulty items. Since Databar barcodes store more detailed information, during routine pre-despatch data capture procedures, Visidot can also simultaneously execute several other forms of verification, such as expiration date monitoring. This guarantees an error free delivery and also ensures that products shipped are always of the highest quality. Should a discrepancy be detected, the item's exact location is visually highlighted for easy corrective action. Additionally, because Visidot records an image of each pallet, this can serve as evidence in the ervent of a future dispute.

DataBar support is included in the new Visidot Reader version 4.5.1, along with other performance and usability improvements. Zetes already has a significant installed base of Visidot users and all existing Visidot Readers can easily be upgraded to support DataBar.

Gerrit-Jan Steenbergen, VP of the Zetes 3i Innovation Centre, explains: "Because of the advantages Databar offers in terms of amount of information stored, we expect a growing number of companies, which use laser scanners in their logistics for instance, to shift to this new identifier. That is why it was essential for our Visidot solution to be ready to support GS1 Databar. Zetes is committed to invest in its portfolio to support future market requirements".
